Course Goals

What you will learn from taking Master Plaster!

  • This comprehensive, real time, practical education package of upper and lower limb casting has something for everyone.

  • For inexperienced clinicians, it will provide the foundation for best practice in applying common casts as well as the ability to explore techniques for uncommon casts and the confidence to apply them.

  • This easily accessible resource provides junior staff, rotating through an area, with all the information they will need. This can enhance their preparation, especially if practice opportunities are limited.

  • Experienced clinicans undoubtably develop good techniques over their years of experience. This package may provide extra ideas and techniques that can used in conjunction with their existing ones to enhance their skills further.

  • This package is ideal in smaller centres or rural areas where education resources or training is limited.

Instructor

Michael Edmonds is a veteran Orthopaedic Physiotherapist with 30+ years of experience working in the public sector. For first-year graduates, he is the ultimate trainer, taking them through the high pressured environment of a public hospital where students need to put their theory into practice. After two decades of being in this senior lecturer role, Michael realised that techniques can be lost over time, so birthed the idea of a 'real-time' medical casting solution for practitioners to feel confident in their application, with patient care top of mind. Michael has just been awarded 'Best Educator' within the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) for 2024.

Bonus material

Master Plaster is a multi-camera shoot, that includes a head-cam, so you can see exactly what you need to see from the presenter's point of view. Master Plaster has engaging visual tools such as 3D animation, illustrating complex medical concepts for Year 1 graduates through to Emergency Rooms to allow easier conceptualising for enhanced memory recall.

  • Bonus material

    Cast Removal

In removing a cast we must avoid harming the patient as much as possible. This video will provide the tips and tricks to safely remove casts, the tools required and the know how to ensure cast removal is a celebration moment for the patient. Not a PTSD moment.

  • Bonus material

    Plaster Disaster: Complications Crime Wall

This short and sometimes disturbing video examines the raw and very real consequences of poor cast complication. Awareness that complications can easily occur, if certain precautions are not accounted for, is the first step to avoiding them. This video will shine a light on how simple errors can create horrific outcomes. But be warned, it's not for the fainthearted.

  • Bonus material

    Casting Materials

Using correct and high quality materials can have a significant impact on the ease and quality of the casts created. This video will expand on the information relating to the materials used in the tutorials. Obviously there are many good and bad material options out there. This video will help clinicians discern what attributes make a material an asset, or a liability, in the cast making process.
